A Stroll through Time: a walking tour of Crosby Garrett

Event Day(s):
Saturday

Saturday 26 July, 10:30-13:15

A stroll through time (much of it along the ancient track of Ladle Lane), taking in a Bronze Age cairn; a probable Iron Age settlement site; the find-site of the Roman cavalryman's helmet known as the Crosby Garrett Helmet; part of the field system of the medieval manor; post-medieval walled intakes of land from the open fell; the use of fieldhouses; the operation of lime kilns; a failed mid-19th century experiment with garden allotments on the fell; and the arrival of the railway. But not necessarily in that order!

Please note there is some water erosion along Ladle Lane, making it rough underfoot, so it is essential that everyone wears suitable walking boots and, if you feel it will help you, bring a walking-stick or hiking-pole.

Numbers are limited and booking is essential: reserve your place by emailing info@westmorlanddalesfestival.org

Western Dales Bus transport is available free of charge from Kirkby Stephen, leaving the Pennine Hotel at 10:00 and returning from Crosby Garrett at 13:00.
